Escobar’s works repurpose recognizable elements from imported material culture to cast a critical look at their impact on Latin America. At the same time, the artist also highlights his materials’ creative potentials, bridging the realms of art and everyday life. Here he focuses on Guatemala’s obsession with car culture: Crash No. 16 and 17 are mangled bumpers from two cars involved in the same accident. Found in the junkyard and later re-chromed, these sculptures were entirely shaped by the happenstance of life itself.
