King Louis Philippe commissioned Sèvres to produce dinner services for each of his residences; this plate was included in one of two services made for the Château de Fontainebleau. The château had been built during the Renaissance, and the king chose a Renaissance style of decoration for the service. The leafy foliage concealing a variety of animals refers to the hunting available in a nearby forest.
