Provenance18th or 19th century, probably acquired by a member of the East or Clayton-East family and passed by descent to Agnes Clayton-East (b. 1871 - d. 1941), London [see note 1]; December 19, 1941, posthumous Agnes Clayton-East sale, Christie's, London, lot 8, sold for £1575 to Frederick Rozendaal (dealer), London; November 27, 1953, sold by Rozendaal to Edward Speelman (dealer), London [see note 2]; until at least 1954, Edward Speelman. June 27, 1955, sold by Malborough Fine Art Ltd., London, to Emil Bührle (b. 1890 – d. 1956), Zurich [see note 3]; until 2009, by descent within the family. July 2009, sold by Colnaghi, London, to Susan and Matthew Weatherbie, Boston.
NOTES:
[1] According to "Works of Art on the Market" in Burlington Magazine, vol. 96 (July 1954), pl. VII , the painting was previously in the collections of Lionel de Rothschild and Georg Schicht. This information is, however, unlikely; inquiries made by Colnaghi confirmed that the painting had not been in the Rothschild collection. It is more likely that Agnes Clayton-East inherited the painting. Her ancestor William East, 1st Bt. (b. 1738 - d. 1819) is known to have built a collection of Dutch paintings in the eighteenth century.
[2] According to information provided by Colnaghi at the time of sale.
