Jean François Dusart (b. 1798 - d. 1883), Brussels [see note 2]; June 26-28, 1884, posthumous Dusart sale, Galerie Saint-Luc, Brussels, lot 129, sold to Charles Rutten (b. 1860 - d. 1919), Brussels [see note 3]; to his widow, Marie Rutten (d. 1943), Brussels; to her nephew, Paul Sorel (d. 1963), Brussels; until 2009, by descent within the family; March 2009, sold by the family, through Michel Ceuterick (dealer), Asper, Belgium, to Susan and Matthew Weatherbie, Boston.

NOTES:
[1] At the time the painting was acquired by the donors, the frame was French and datable to about 1770. It may have been commissioned specifically for this painting.

[2] Earlier generations of the Dusart family collected art, but it is unknown if this painting belonged to his grandfather, Bernard Dusart (d. 1782) or father Pierre Laurent Dusart (b. 1764 - d. 1833), both of Mechelen.

[3] Around 1900, Charles Rutten produced a handwritten catalogue of his collection. This painting was no. 9 ("La Meuse aux environs de Dordrecht"), and noted to have been purchased at the 1884 sale.
