ProvenanceAbout 1910, made for Quincy Adams Shaw, Jr. (b. 1869 – d. 1960) for the dining room of the General Charles G. Loring House, Prides Crossing, MA [see note 1]; by descent in the Shaw-Codman family to Samuel Codman (b. 1908- d. 2008); 2008, house and contents sold to Peter G. Loring and other descendants of Charles G. Loring; July 3, 2012, house and contents sold by Peter Loring to Helen Greiner, Prides Crossing; 2015, sconces removed from Loring House upon its demolition [see note 2]; 2018, gift of Helen Greiner to the MFA. (Accession Date: December 12, 2018)

NOTES:
[1] General Charles Greely Loring (1828-1902), the owner of the Loring House from the time it was completed in 1884 by architect William Ralph Emerson until his death in 1902, was elected Trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1873, given general charge of the Museum as Curator in 1886, then his title was changed to Director in 1887. He served as the MFA's first Director from 1887-1902. [2] The sconces were removed by the Friends of the Loring House when building was demolished, with the approval of Helen Greiner.
