DescriptionLuis Gispert is a multidisplinary, Brooklyn-based artist working primarily in photography and sculpture whose art charts the intersections between subcultures and mass culture. A prime example of Gispert’s photography, “Untitled (Car Girls)” forms part of his most acclaimed photographic series, which first brought him to art world attention in the early aughts. The series depicts cheerleaders stylized with 90s hip-hop jewelry like gold chains and acrylic nails, specifically nodding to Miami women and girls’ Latinization of the midwestern feminine trope. Referencing the language of cinema and sports photography, Gispert both borrows and subvert each industry’s techniques—such as the green-screen for special effects or capturing illusion of the sports hero floating in midair, here through the use of long exposure.
