Description

Alison’s work was on display at the Shelter in Place Gallery in July 2020, and we are acquiring Shelter in Place with two examples of artist’ work that were shown while the gallery was live in artist Eben Haines’ home.

Alison Croney Moses studied furniture design at the Rhode Island School of Design and lives in Jamaica Plain in Boston. She teaches young people how to work with wood at the Eliot School of Fine & Applied Arts, founded in 1676 and one of the oldest post-colonial centers of craft in the United States. Using techniques such as coopering (related to making wooden casks and barrels) and bent lamination, she highlights forms found in nature while creating objects that encourage interaction.

In the studio, Alison Croney Moses creates sculptures with wood, a material that even after being cut down still mimics life, changing with its environment. She pushes the wood to its limits and it pushes back. Her public creative practice is rooted in empowering youth through creativity and art to make positive change in the world around them. She strives to create situations and objects where people are compelled to interact, to express and therefore challenge themselves to stand taller, to build community, and to work toward a more just future.

We currently hold one work of Alison’s in the collection of the MFA and this work, Tiny Cedar Pod Blue, is a perfect accompaniment and complement in miniature, showcasing her skills in a medium over which she has masterful control at any scale.
