Although he is widely considered part of The Hague School, Marius ten Kate maintained strong ties to the Romantic tradition practiced by his father, also a painter. He represented landscapes, beach scenes, and genre pieces that are almost universally characterized by an Impressionistic airyness that the artist absorbed while traveling to Paris. Nonetheless he was an active member of the Pulchri Studio, which was a sort of artists’ society where exhibitions were also held. Marius ten Kate died at only thirty-six years old.
