DescriptionThis poster advertising a 1907 Academy of Fine Arts exhibition at the Leipzig Buchgewerbehaus, a commercial center for the graphic arts, presents the act of looking at art by a woman as a form of modern, urban performance. The composition frames the head and shoulders of the woman, emphasizing the close study of works of art rather than the more typical presentation where the body of a fashionable young woman is the central focus. To date, little is known about the designer of the poster beyond their initials and surname F.W. Loy. The overt foregrounding of a woman engaged in close study of art may be an acknowledgement of the fact that the Leipzig Fine Arts Academy was one of the first to admit women in 1905. It is plausible that this poster was designed by a woman artist enrolled at the academy.
