Description
The quiet mood of this picture, in which Mary nurses her infant son, is appropriate for prayer in a domestic setting. As the Christ Child suddenly turns to acknowledge the viewer, drops of milk escape. The emphasis on the tenderness between mother and child suggests that this was made for a female audience. We can be sure, however, that it was created by a woman artist. Barbara Longhi, a specialist in small devotional works, was one of the few female painters mentioned in the 1568 edition of Vasari’s Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, a landmark set of biographies of artists
Provenance17th century, possibly in a German collection [see note 1]. 1910, with Davis and Davis (gallery), Weston-super-Mare, England [see note 2]. September 1, 2020, anonymous sale, Gorringes, Lewes, lot 346 [see note 3]. March 28, 2021, anonymous sale, The Auction House, London, lot 171, not sold [see note 4]; 2021, probably sold privately by The Auction House to Robert Simon Fine Art, New York; 2022, sold by Robert Simon Fine Art to the MFA. (Accession Date: April 20, 2022)
