ProvenanceSaid to have been worn by by Gov. James Bowdoin of Boston, while in Paris between 1805 and 1808 (at a ball given by Napoleon I, according to family lore). Passed to his grand-nephew James Bowdoin Winthrop by inheritance, then to Robert C. Winthop, Jr. (newphew of J. B. Winthrop), who gave it to the MFA in February, 1901.
