Portrait of Jules Hardouin-Mansart
Platemark: 51.4 × 37.9 cm (20 1/4 × 14 15/16 in.)
In this impression, all four fingers on the subject's right hand are extended straight out; in another impression in the MFA (P4891) the two middle fingers are curled under. This latter impression has the address of Bligny, and so the state with all the fingers straight out is the earlier state. There is an impression in the British Museum (1943,1113.191) with the dedication to M. de Cotte removed, with the two middle fingers curled under, and before the address of Bligny. Therefore, there are four states of this print:
i. With the dedication to M. de Cotte. The four fingers are straight out.
ii. The dedication has been removed. The four fingers are still straight out (MFA 33.30).
iii. The two middle fingers are now curled under (British Museum 1943,1113.191).
iv. With the address of Bligny.
