This was Grant Wood's first lithograph. In 1934, New York dealer Reeves Lowenthal sent lithographic stones to the artist in Iowa. It would be three years before Wood completed the print. Unsure of the unfamiliar medium, he required much coaxing from both Leventhal and other artists. Wood went on to produce nineteen lithographs, which alongside those of Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry are still widely admired as some of the most attractive works of the American Regionalist School.
