Elizabeth Howard BartolAmerican, 1842–1927
Bartol was herself an artist and designer who studied with William Morris Hunt and Thomas Couture. She inherited a major collection, primarily of European furniture, from her ancestors James and Hepzibah Swan, which she left to the MFA. Bartol also allowed the MFA to choose works from her collection which included eclectic selections of Old Master prints and Sevres porcelain; the Museum's choices included her Boudin, Port of Le Havre which was purchased from Boston's Chase Gallery in 1927 and bequest to the MFA the same year.
