Samuel ColmanAmerican, 1832 or 1833–1920
As an prolific artist in the Hudson River School and interior design collaborator with Tiffany and Company, Colman was able to paint and collect extensively in Europe, North Africa, and America. He was the founder and President of the American Society of Painters in Water Colors and a member of several other arts organizations. Colman's collection includes paintings by Corot, Delacroix, and Rembrandt as well as a significant Asian and Persian objects. He owned John Singer Sargent's Fishing for Oysters at Cancale, later held by Susan Travers and finally Mary Appleton in 1905. The painting was given as a gift to the MFA in 1935.
