Lucian Freud, the most celebrated British figurative painter of the last century, passed away on July 20, 2011 at the age of 88. His subjects ranged from the supermodel Kate Moss to Queen Elizabeth II: none were spared his intense scrutiny. "I want paint to work as flesh," he once said. "As far as I am concerned, the paint is the person." Ambitious into old age, he leaves a legacy of some of the most profound and remarkable portraits in the history of art .
