Beauford Delaney (1901-1979)

Tennessee-born Delaney studied at art schools in Boston, including the Copley Society, before moving to New York City in 1929. There, he painted members of his Harlem and Greenwich Village artistic and intellectual circles, the socially disenfranchised, and urban scenes. He assisted with Charles Alston’s Harlem Hospital murals for the WPA/FAP and exhibited his work with growing frequency as he gained recognition. His expressionistic, jazz-influenced style became increasingly abstract in Paris, where he lived from 1953 until his death.
