Alvin Loving (1935-2005)
Loving studied painting at the University of Illinois (BFA, 1963) and the University of Michigan (MFA, 1965). Settling in NYC from 1968, he later taught at City College (1988-1996). His early style explored complicated relationships between hard geometric forms and color. A testament to his success as an artist of geometric abstraction, Loving received NEA grants in 1970, 1974, 1984, a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1986, and a Joan Mitchell Award and Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 1996.
