Nayland Blake (American, born 1960)

Working in a variety of media, from gingerbread to video installations, Nayland Blake explores and confronts definitions of sexuality and race, examining queer and interracial culture through his art. Selected for the Whitney Biennial (1991) as well as the Venice Biennale (1993), and winning a Guggenheim Fellowship (2012), Blake sees objects as a way to “think out loud” about his own identity, the way we perceive that identity, and its representation in the larger American culture.
