Faith Ringgold
Faith Ringgold (American, b. 1930)
Raised in Harlem, Ringgold attended CUNY (BS, 1955; MFA, 1959) and taught at UC-San Diego (1987-2002). The recipient of numerous honors for her children’s books, paintings, and quilts, including a Guggenheim, two NEA awards, and 17 honorary doctorates, Ringgold was involved in both the Black Arts and Feminist Movements. While her early paintings responded to the Civil Rights movement and Vietnam, her later works are semi-autobiographical narratives, mixed-media “story quilts” inspired by the African American experience.
