Arshile Gorky (Vosdanik Manoog Adoian)

Arshile Gorky (c.1904-1948) was born Vosdanig Adoian in Khorkom (present-day Dilkaya), on the shores of Lake Van, circa 1904. The village lay in Van Province, on the eastern border of the Ottoman Empire (present-day Turkey).

Gorky entered the USA as a child refugee in 1920 and was granted US citizenship (his first and only) on May 20, 1939.
