Horatio Appleton Lamb
H.A. Lamb descended from a prominent Boston family and collected widely in a variety of media. A Harvard graduate, Mr. Lamb had a dry-goods business before leading or serving on the boards of numerous Boston banks and insurance companies. He married Annie Lawrence Rotch and inheirited family portraits by Benjamin West and Henry Sargent while his sister, Rose, studied with William Morris Hunt. She may have interested her brother in 19th century works. The Lambs collected many Impressionist and Barbizon works, but had a special interest in Thaulow. They acquired Skiers at the Top of Snow-Covered Hill in 1926, which passed on to their daughters, Aimee and Rosamond Lamb. They gave it as a gift to the MFA in 1978, among many other works of sculpture, paper, and furniture.
