Valerie "Vally" Wieselthierborn in Austria, 1895–1945

Vally Wieselthier studied from 1914-1920 at the Kunstgewerbeschule under Michael Powoln. In 1922 she held her first ceramics show at th Haus Werkbund fair at Frankfurt am Main, and soonafter opened her own workshop in Vienna, "Keramische Werkstatte Vally Wieselthier". She later sold the workshop to the Wiener Werkstatte and was invited by Joseph Hoffman to head the ceramics workshop there. She won silver and gold medals at the 1925 Exposition des Arts Industriels et Decoratives in Paris.

Wieselthier's work was included amongst Wiener Werkstatte entries at the 1928 Exposition of Decorative Arts held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. following the exhibition, in 1929, she was given a solo show in New York which traveled to Detroit and Pittsburgh. Though she returned to Vienna following her American tour, Wieselthier maintained her American contacts and soon settled permanently in the United States. Among her many American ventures, she designed for Sebring Pottery in Ohio, General Ceramics in New York, taught at Tulane University and in New York, and opened her own workshop at 24 East 8th St., New York, NY.
