Walter Augustus Simon (1916-1979)

Born in Brooklyn, Simon taught art and art history after serving in WW II from 1941 to 1945. With support from the G.I. Bill, he obtained a BS, MA, and then a doctorate in Art History from NYU (PhD, 1961); he also studied with Hale Woodruff. Simon’s style reflects his art historical interest in modernism. He utilized a tactile and synthetic cubist aesthetic to depict urban surroundings with abstracted forms.
