Felrath Hines
Felrath Hines (American, 1913-1993)
Abstract painter Felrath Hines worked both as an artist and as a paintings conservator at museums in New York and then in Washington D. C. After moving to New York from Chicago in 1946, Hines began showing his paintings in local galleries. His bold use of color and sharp, abstract lines attracted attention of other artists, and, in 1963, he became a founding member of the New York group Spiral, an African American artists collective concerned about the role of their art in the Civil Rights movement.
