Jose Antonio da Silva
José Antonio Da Silva (Brazil, 1909-1996)
Born in Sales Oliveira in southern Brazil, da Silva worked as an itinerant farmer, drawing in his spare time. After placing first in the Salon at São José do Rio Preto (1946), he committed himself fully to a career in art. His vivid scenes of farming life in Brazil captured critical attention, and led to several international exhibitions. He founded the Municipal Museum of the Primitive Art of Rio Preto (1980), which displays much of his work.
