Painting scenes that reflect everyday city life, Vidal da Rocha depicts the street culture, music, and people of his native Rio de Janeiro. Encouraged by the artists Heitor dos Prazeres, an early influence, and Emiliano di Cavalcanti, Vidal da Rocha pursued an artistic career, and became well known for his works showcasing Rio “train surfers,” Brazilian youths who illegally and dangerously ride on top of train cars.
