Waldomiro de Deus (Brazilian, born 1944)
Born in the east coast state of Bahia in 1944, Waldomiro de Deus’ paintings reflect the rural life and rituals of his Bahian home. After working in various professions as a young man, de Deus discovered a talent for painting, and began exhibiting his first works in São Paulo in 1965. Self-taught, he uses bold colors to explore the mingling of African and Brazilian cultures in both religious and everyday life.
