Ahmedabad Wood Carving Company
Ahmedabad Wood Carving Company was a company founded by Lockwood de Forest in 1881 for the purpose of importing hand-carved teak woodwork from Ahmedabad, India to New York. He partnered with the Hutheesing family, a prominent merchant family in Ahmedabad, to sell original woodwork to designers and furniture makers in New York. De Forest also designed and commissioned furniture which was executed by Indian craftsmen and sold under the company name. Influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, Lockwood de Forest sought to revive and sustain the dwindling woodcarving craft in India by infusing it with money from abroad.
In 1908, de Forest sold his shares of the company to Tiffany, who maintained operations for about twenty more years.
