Juan Roberto Diago
Juan Roberto Diago Durruthy ("Diago") ("Juan Roberto Diago") (Born in 1971 in Havana) is a Cuban contemporary artist based in Havana.
Hailing from a long line of Afro-Cuban artists, musicians and intellectuals, Juan Roberto Diago has been a leading voice in Cuban art produced on the island since the mid 1990s. “Yo soy monte" is a prime example of his wall hung sculptural works made from materials he sources from his everyday life in Havana. In it he combines a found wood backdrop with his succinct style of figuration that draws on both the expressive efficiency of graffiti art and the symbolism of Afro-Cuban religious traditions. The gift of Diago's "Yo soy monte" fulfills the contemporary art collection strategy goal of strengthening our holdings of artists from regions of the Americas that are currently underrepresented in our collection.
