John Livingston

Northwest coast carver. Married to Maxine Matilpi (Kwakwaka’wakw). They are based in Alert Bay, Vancouver, and together they create textile art objects. John Livingston was born in Vancouver, BC and moved to Victoria at a young age. He apprenticed with carvers Henry and Tony Hunt (Kwaguilths). With Tony Hunt, he started Raven Arts Studio in the 1970s, where they have trained many carvers. Together, they also started the Hunt Family, Fort Rupert Dancers. John Livingston has created over 25 totem poles and numerous carvings.

When collaborative with Maxine Matilpi, John Livingston will design the main crest figure and she will design the motifs applied to borders.
