Mestre DidiBrazilian, 1917–2013
Deoscoredes Maximiliano dos Santos (1917 - 2013) also known as Maestre Didi was a Brazilian priest and sculptor whose works reflect symbols and concepts of Afro-Brazilian religion, particularly Candomble Nago. As a young priest-artist, his primary focus was creating religious objects and art that are viewed within a religious context and exclusively for the Candomble community but as he grew older and as Candomble became more accepted, he began to exhibit some of his religious themed works in secular museums.
Santos was a high priest of Opo Afonxa Candomble and supreme priest of the Obaluaiye (Sopona) egungun cult in Brazil.
