Mary Ann Le Cotes HastingsAmerican, 1862–1954

Mary Ann Le Cotes Hastings was born in Nov. 1856 in Sussex Country, Delaware (both of her parents where also native to Delaware). She married William W. Hastings around 1877. William W. Hastings was also born in Delaware, presumably Sussex County, and his parents were also native to Delaware. By 1900, they lived on a farm in the Little Creek Hundred area of Delmar (Delmar was incorporated by 1859). The Hastings owned their farm free and clear. Their first child was born in Dec. 1882; her name was Katie or Katherine M. Hastings; there is no known information on their second child. By 1910, William W. Hastings had died, and Mary Ann was living with her adopted daughter, Lillian M. Hasting of New York, in a house in Delmar off of income from the farm. By 1920, Mary Ann was living in a house in Delmar on North Second Street with her widowed daughter, Katie M. Francis, and her two grandchildren. Mary J. Francis (b. in Delaware around 1906) and William H. Francis (b. in Delaware around 1907). Their father, whose name remains unknown, was born in Virginia. Katie was a music teacher who worked at home; the extended family was supported by farm income. By 1930, little had changed, except the grandchilden had moved out. Katie still taught music lessons; they owned a radio; and their house was valued at $2,500.
