Mustafa DedeOttoman, 1495 – 1538
Mustafa (Muṣṭafā) Dede was the son of the great Shayk Hamdullâh, and a very good calligrapher in his own right. He was born in Amasya in the Black Sea region ca. 1495 and died in Istanbul in 1538. His teacher was Abdullâh Amâsî, but he eventually taught himself his father’s style, which he went on to teach his own students. His works are quite rare. In the second half of the eighteenth century, Müstakimzâde complained that Mustafa Dede’s works were so prized that many fakes were being produced.
