Abū Bakr, known as Ṣandal

Abū Bakr, known as Ṣandal, was a master illuminator in Mamluk Egypt. He is most well-known for his illumination of a copy of the Qur'an for Rukn al-Dīn Baybars, who ruled as Sultan Baybars II from 1309-1310. The sobriquet Ṣandal means, "sandalwood," and suggests that the illuminator may have been an eunuch.
