Sarah Wyman WhitmanAmerican, 1842–1904

Sarah Wyman Whitman, a Boston artist and pupil of William Morris Hunt, was an active supporter of the Museum of Fine Arts. In 1904, with the purchase fund in her name, the MFA acquired the portrait of Philip IV attributed to Velasquez and in 1915, The Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine by Barna da Siena. She also gave the MFA two landscapes by American Impressionist John Twachtman.
