Description
Originally from The Hague, Corneille de Lyon's extensive workshop at the French court produced small portraits bearing the master's signature traits: dark monochromatic backgrounds (often blue or green), lifelike expressions, and exquisite embellishments indicating the sitter's standing. His works were intended for intimate viewing—to be handled by the sitter or a loved one.
ProvenanceBy 1919, with Francois Flameng, Paris; May 26, 1919, Flameng sale, Lair-Dubreuil, Paris, lot 10, to Walter Gay for the MFA for $28,350. (Accession Date: September 11, 1919)
