This major work is one of the Unfurleds, a series in which Louis reduced the composition to cascading asymmetric stripes on either side that vibrate in vivid colors on the bare canvas. Louis determined the final size of his paintings only when preparing them for an exhibition. Since the Unfurleds were never exhibited during his lifetime, the size of this work was probably decided by others.
