Description

This Hurd ladle is similar to one by William Swan (cat. no. 119), although it is executed with less refinement, as seen in the shaping of the bowl and the cast elements.

This text has been adapted from "Silver of the Americas, 1600-2000," edited by Jeannine Falino and Gerald W.R. Ward, published in 2008 by the MFA. Complete references can be found in that publication.

InscriptionsOn back of bowl engraved "N/I*M" in shaded roman letters.ProvenanceAccording to family history, George Stevens (1867 – 1953), the donor, inherited the ladle from Daniel L. Hazard (b. 1865), Nancook Farm, Narragansett, Rhode Island. The initials “N / I*M” may stand for a member of the Nichols family, possibly a relative of Susannah Nichols (1662 – 1746), wife of Thomas Hazard (1660 – 1746), m. 1682.
