Description
Regency furniture was frequently produced in luxurious materials with veneers of zebrawood, mahogany, and rosewood, and often embellished with patinated and gilt mounts. A purely British invention, this sofa table may have been used for writing, dressing, or intimate dining, making its sleek form suitable for domestic use.
ProvenanceH. Blairman and Sons, Ltd., London [see note 1]. Private collection, Jersey, England. 1985, H. Blairman and Sons, Ltd., London. 1986, acquired on the London art market by Horace Wood Brock, New York; 2004, gift of Horace Wood Brock to the MFA. (Accession Date: December 15, 2004)

NOTES:
[1] According to information provided by Martin Levy of Blairman and Sons (e-mail correspondence, December 23, 2004), the table passed through the gallery's hands at an unknown date -- possibly having been purchased on the London art market -- before it entered the private collection in Jersey. Blairman acquired the table a second time before selling it again. It was published by Frances Collard, Regency Furniture (Woodbridge, England, 1985), p. 317, ill. (photo credit, Blairman and Sons).
