Albert Paley, a renowned craftsman and educator, originally made sculptural jewelry before branching out into furniture and public art commissions. This floor lamp from the Millennium series reflects Paley’s interest in Abstract Expressionism and art nouveau. His use of steel, an industrial material, and his incorporation of rough edges reflects the use of unconventional and scavenged materials in Abstract Expressionist sculpture. However, Paley also bends the industrial metal into delicate curves, and he adorns the lamp with a highly finished length of steel that curls like a ribbon around the stand. The juxtaposition of refined and unfinished forms characterizes much of his work.
