By 1915, the role of woodblock prints as records of current events had been superseded by lithographic prints and postcards. This color lithograph shows many details of the events connected with the Taishō enthronement ceremony. At the bottom center is an aerial view of the Kyoto Enthronement Commemoration Exhibition, with the emperor’s Phoenix Carriage passing above it. In the top center position is the Shishinden, the main hall of the imperial palace in Kyoto, with banners and colorfully dressed courtiers in position for the ceremony. The throne itself is to the right, and to the left, the Imperial Regalia are carried in. At the center right are the double buildings prepared for the Daijōsai, the third and most sacred part of the enthronement.
