Description
Red stoneware was an early by-product of Bottger's attenpts to replicate the formula for true porcelain. Small objects, such as this plaque and the small portrait bust of a Roman emperor, were among the earliest objects Meissen produced. In 1711, Augustus the Strong presented an identical relief to his cousin, King Frederik IV of Denmark, the first known instance of Meissen porcelain being presented as a diplomatic gift.
