Description
When the MFA was founded in 1870, one goal was that the collections would serve as inspiration for craftsmen and designers. This cup and saucer came as a gift from the Meissen factory archives. Boston's leading ceramics retailer, Richard Briggs, had asked for gifts on several previous visits to Germany. In 1880, the factory director finally gave in and sent this cup with instructions that Briggs present it to the "museum of your town."
