NOTES:
[1] With the Anschluss, or annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany in March, 1938, the possessions of Alphonse and Clarice de Rothschild were seized and expropriated almost immediately by National Socialist forces. This painting, however, was not looted with the rest of the collection. It was given over to attorney Albrecht Alberti for safekeeping and was returned after World War II. Felicitas Kunth, Die Rothschild'schen Gemäldesammlung in Wien (Vienna, Böhlau, 2006), p. 274; confirmed by a document from the Bundesdenkmalamt, Vienna dating October 23, 1947, kindly supplied by Martijn Le Coultre.
