Published at a time when the natural wonders of the western United States were becoming an object of national fascination, this wood engraving brought the gigantic redwood trees in California's Calaveras Grove back east, to the subscribers of the Cincinnati Weekly Times. The print was a bonus gift, suitable for framing, that accompanied the newspaper. The artist has helpfully included the names of the enormous trees, which the publishers no doubt hoped would become tourist attractions for visitors who might stay at the hotel at center. Among the poetic grove are “The Father of the Forest,” “The Mother of the Forest,” “The Three Graces,” “The Big Tree,” “The Minor’s Cabin,” “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” “The Horseback Ride,” and “The Two Guardsmen or Sentinels.”
