Jiro Kamata is a Japanese artist currently living and working in Munich. His work is known for its incorporation of optical lenses. The Sunny Brooch (2005) features three purple-tinted lenses and one gold-plated lens is the first example of his use of optical material in his jewelry. Kamata described, “In this moment I was interested in the function of the material. Sunglass absorbs the sunlight, which has an opposite function to the gemstone. This series was also an important step for the next body of my work MOMENTOPIA with camera lens piece.” This is the first piece of the artist’s current series. Over the last fifteen years, Kamata’s work has become much more colorful. Sunny brooch demonstrates the evolution of the artist's body of work and is central to understanding Kamata’s more recent innovations.
