Foundation is a basket made by Shan Goshorn, one of around 200 produced by the artist since 2000. The weaves of the basket are made from Cherokee Guiding Principles, a document written by the tribal hospital administration in Cherokee, North Carolina. This didactic text is juxtaposed with the reflections of a current member of the Cherokee on what it means to be Cherokee in Cherokee syllabary. The interior of the basket is black, white, and bright green. It is made using the traditional Cherokee “Fishbone” basket pattern, remixed using archival texts in place of traditional organic materials.
Provenance2018, upon the death of the artist, to Shan Goshorn Studio, Tulsa; 2021, sold by Shan Gorshon Studio to the MFA. (Accession Date: April 14, 2021)
