BRITISH RAILWAYS. A powerful electric locomotive leaving Woodhead Tunnel at the head of a Manchester express on Britain's first all-electric main line. It links Manchester with Sheffield. The locomotive, which has six motors, weighs 102 tons. The new Woodhead Tunnel, over 3 miles long, was opened in 1954. It replaces the two old single-track tunnels.

BRITISH RAILWAYS. Here is a modified Merchant Navy Class locomotive hauling the famous Atlantic Coast Express which links London with the West of England resorts. These locomotives, having lost their air-smoothed covering, now present a more orthodox appearance.

BRITISH RAILWAYS. SOUTHERN REGION. The Devon Belle Pullman car train hauled by a Merchant Navy Class Pacific Locomotive, climbing Honiton Bank, Devon. This incline arises at 1 in 80 for 5 miles, and is a sever test for the locomotive.

BRITISH RAILWAYS. This 3,300 h.p. diesel electric locomotive built by English Electric Co. Ltd. is powered by a Napier 'Deltic' 18 cylinder engine. The world's most powerful single unit locomotive it is seen here working a London Midland Region express.

BRITISH RAILWAYS. WESTERN REGION. A Cornish express crossing the famous Royal Albert Bridge, Saltash, which spans the Tamar estuary to link Devon and Cornwall. It was Brunel's final and greatest engineering feat. Each of the two main spans is 455 ft. in length with long approach arches.
