Jacob's ladders-fashioned from rope, with wooden rungs-were utilized on ships in places where rigid ladders or stairs were impractical, as seen on the model of "Constitution" in this gallery. This example reportedly was taken from that vessel in 1895, while it was at the United States Navy Yard in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
